HeatNEWS - Net Zero with heat storage
Helping to accelerate the deployment of thermal energy storage in Ireland
About the project
Thermal Energy Storage (TES) has underutilised potential to support decarbonisation in Ireland. It is cost-effective and requires less resources than other energy storage technologies such as electrical batteries. Current evaluations show that TES is much cheaper than battery storage, with a significantly longer lifespan. TES is underexplored in the Irish context, and research is required to explore and communicate opportunities, guide policy and demonstrate projects.
The HeatNEWS project aims to help accelerate the deployment of thermal energy storage (TES) and the provision of electricity grid services by TES in Ireland through:
- Comparative review and suitability analysis of TES.
- Sector integration analysis of TES. This will explore TES and sector integration nationally, across residential, commercial, public and industrial sectors.
- Development of a business model analysis of cross-sectoral TES opportunities, including a case study of the Tallaght District Heating Scheme
- Development of a roadmap for thermal storage
- Development of a ‘how-to guide’ for incorporating thermal storage into heating systems
- Engagement and dissemination
This project builds on international best practice and applies it to the Irish context, growing Ireland’s knowledge in the fields of sector integration and thermal storage. This, combined with effective stakeholder engagement and dissemination, will grow Ireland’s capacity development in this strategic area.
This project will also provide insights and guidance to local and national policy-makers and public bodies to set policies that enable and encourage the uptake of TES solutions. The project results will be disseminated through targeted workshops and conference presentations.
