Codema visits Rotterdam for MultiRoofs kick-off

MultiRoofs is a European project exploring the potential of rooftop space to meet our energy, climate, biodiversity and cultural needs.

Last month, members of the Codema team visited Rotterdam for the kick-off meeting of MultiRoofs, an Interreg NWE project co-funded by the European Union. Over the next four and a half years, Codema will work with a consortium of 13 other partners to develop a digital twin tool to help public authorities determine the best solution for rooftop space.

Across the two-day event, partners had the opportunity to get to know one another, determine a vision and set of values for the project, and establish ways of working. Two days of workshops were followed by a tour of Rotterdam’s rooftops, showing best-practice examples of multi-functional ways to utilise rooftop spaces.

The tour included the rooftop of the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the first publicly accessible art depot in the world, a shared rooftop space for staff, patients and visitors at the Erasmus Medical Centre, and the rooftop of the concert hall de Doelen.

What is MultiRoofs?

Space can be scarce in urban environments. Fortunately, cities have a lot of unused space on flat and slanted roofs. MultiRoofs is about identifying how we can make the most out of this space by using it in many ways. Space on rooftops can be used as a sustainable solution that increases territorial resilience and improves the livelihood of local communities.

MultiRoofs is an INTERREG NWE project co-funded by the European Union, which aims to connect local authorities, property owners, businesses, experts, interest groups and research organisations to jointly fast-track multifunctional utilisation of rooftops.
