A win for the Tallaght District Heating Scheme at the SEAI Energy Awards
We are proud to announce that the Tallaght District Heating Scheme has won the prestigious SEAI Energy Award in the ‘Innovative Deployment of Renewable Energy’ category.
Recognition for Ireland's first large-scale district heating scheme
We are proud to announce that the Tallaght District Heating Scheme (TDHS) has won the prestigious SEAI Energy Award in the ‘Innovative Deployment of Renewable Energy’ category. This accolade recognises the Tallaght District Heating Scheme as a pioneering initiative, setting a benchmark for Ireland’s low-carbon heating sector.
As the first large-scale district heating network of its kind in the country, the TDHS operates through Heat Works, Ireland’s first not-for-profit energy utility, fully owned by South Dublin County Council. The scheme exemplifies local leadership in renewable energy, offering an innovative and efficient way to reduce emissions and promote local climate action.
The TDHS helps cut carbon emissions in the Tallaght area by almost 1,500 tonnes of CO2 annually. Its innovative approach centres on capturing waste heat from the nearby AWS data centre, which supplies 100% of the heat to the network during normal operation. This not only delivers renewable heating solutions but also reduces reliance on traditional fossil fuels, contributing significantly to Ireland’s clean energy goals.
What sets TDHS apart is its status as the only scheme in Ireland and the UK that utilises waste heat from a local data centre. Additionally, the system incorporates a unique low-carbon solution that optimises recyclable heat with advanced heat-pump technology. While data centre waste heat currently powers the network, the flexible design allows for the integration of further renewable heat sources as the system evolves.
Winning this award highlights the dedication and collaboration of Codema and South Dublin County Council in shaping the future of Ireland’s low-carbon heating sector. It serves as a beacon for how community-focused, renewable energy initiatives can make a meaningful impact.
A big well done also to our colleagues and friends in the Triple SEC and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council who were also honoured with SEAI awards for their inspiring work.
