Research, Development and Innovation

Ciarán leads Codema’s Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) area. RDI works to develop the evidence base for Dublin’s climate transition and explores best practice climate action case studies from European cities and energy agencies, collaborating widely on research and demonstration projects, to benefit Dublin’s transition. Before Codema, Ciarán worked in SEAI with a coordination role on the National Heat Study. Prior to that Ciarán worked for ESB Networks in various roles; modelling renewable connections, network design, smart metering, also participating in ESB’s innovation programme.

Ciarán has a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and a master's in energy systems engineering from UCD.

Rebecca joined Codema in April 2017, she leads Codema’s energy planning and emissions modelling work. She holds a bachelor’s in architecture and civil engineering from the University of Malta and a Master’s in Sustainable Infrastructure from TU Dublin. Rebecca has led several EU and local projects, focusing on energy planning, building energy efficiency, and emissions modelling. She played a key role in developing the Dublin Region Energy Masterplan, co-wrote energy and carbon assessments to inform development plans and developed the decarbonising zones’ evidence base. Rebecca has also worked on emissions quantification, spatial energy mapping, energy and planning policies.

John holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Energy from University College Cork, and a BEng in Civil Engineering from IT Carlow. He is a CIBSE certified Heat Networks Consultant and a qualified Domestic BER Assessor. John has expertise in the design and hydraulic analysis of district heating networks, industrial energy auditing (across Europe and the US), large-scale district cooling thermo-dynamic analysis (in the Middle East), building energy compliance (in both the UK and Ireland) and energy strategy. John has also acted as an advisor on policy within the district energy sector in the UK and Ireland.

Eoin joined Codema in March 2018. He holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering from UCD and both taught and research Master's in Sustainable Energy from UCC. Eoin is an SEAI Registered Energy Auditor, a Certified Energy Manager and holds a Certificate in Public Procurement. He also holds a micro-credential qualification from TCD in Transport Modelling and Planning. Prior to joining Codema, Eoin was operations engineer at the combined heat and power (CHP) plant at St. James's Gate Brewery, and also previously worked as an energy analyst in the UK on the development of smart domestic energy control systems.

Neil joined Codema in 2022. He holds a BE in Energy Engineering from University College Cork and an MSc in Energy Science from Trinity College Dublin. Prior to joining Codema, Neil worked as a mechanical engineer with PM Group in Cork and Integral Group in Vancouver. Neil's role in Codema is to support the RD&I cell. His responsibilities include techno-economic feasibility studies of low-carbon energy projects, facilitating the development of renewable energy projects in Dublin, supporting Codema’s work on EU or national funded R&D projects and preparing responses to public consultations on energy and climate change.

Arthur joined Codema in April 2023 as an Energy System Engineer working with our Research, Development and Innovation team. He has a Masters degree from the engineering school programme of IMT Nord Europe, where he specialised in energy and environment. In previous roles, Arthur notably worked on the +CityxChange project in Limerick that aimed to integrate renewable energy sources into the city and reduce CO2 emissions through the creation of a positive energy district. Arthur's work within Codema focuses on Energy Planning and in particular on Decarbonising Zones, where he looks into baseline emissions inventory and decarbonisation strategies.

Gráinne joined Codema in May 2023. Gráínne holds a BSc in City Planning and Environmental Policy and an MSc in Regional and Urban Planning, both from UCD. Gráinne completed a thesis on the topic of using waste heat from data centres for district heating in Ireland. Gráinne works across a range of projects in Codema, particularly in the area of transport. Before joining Codema Gráinne worked as a research assistant on a project conducted by the OPR and the Department of Housing. Gráinne has also worked in planning consulting where she was involved in preparing planning applications in the Dublin region.

James joined Codema in May of 2023 as an Energy Systems Graduate in the Research, Development and Innovation cell. He completed a Masters in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering with a specialisation in renewable energy and structural design. His Master's thesis focused on the value of BIM for different stakeholders. Previously, he worked on projects calculating the value of geospatial information to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. At Codema, James works on energy planning and develops our sustainability reporting. He is currently pursuing two micro credentials in energy system decarbonisation and energy policy and Chartership with Engineers Ireland.

Kieran holds a Masters of Energy Systems Engineering from University of Galway. His thesis here was a study modelling a ground source heat pump and its associated thermal field for the installation of such an installation on campus to heat the sports centre’s swimming pool. He has worked as an intern in ESB Smart Energy Services, which provided tailored solutions to reduce a client’s energy use and carbon emissions. Since joining Codema in 2023 he has played a role in many energy assessment and district heating rollout projects.
